THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET
The history of the Internet is complex and involves many aspect. The Internet came to be as a result of the thought of some visionary people in 1960. These people foresee the importance and the great benefits in allowing computers to connect, interact and share information on research and development in scientific and military fields. J.C.R Licklider of MIT was the first to propose a local network of computers in August 1962. He envisioned a globally interconnected set of computers through which everyone could easily and quickly access data and programs from any site. He covinced his successors including MIT researcher, Lawrence G. Roberts of the importance of this networking concept. This is very much like the Internet of today. Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first book on packet switching in 1964. Kleinrock convinced Roberts of the possibility of using packets rather than circuit. This was a major step towards the accomplishment of computer networking.
The Internet which was then known as Arpanet was brought on line in 1969 under the renamed Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DARPA connected four major computers at four different universities in the South Western United States together to interact. The four universities are; UCLA, Stanford Research Institute,UCSB and University of UTAH. During the following years, computers were added quickly to the Arpanet and work proceeded on completing a functionally complete hostnto host protocol and other network software..In October,1972, the new network technology (ARPANET) was introduced to the public at the International Computer Communication Conference (ICCC) which was organized by Kahn. In the same year, the application, electronic mail (e-mail) was also introduced. In march, Ray Tomlison at BBN wrote the basic email message, send and read software. This was motivated by the need of the ARPANET developers for an easy coordination mechanism. Robert expanded the utility of email by writing the first email utility programs to list, selectively read, file, forward and respond to messages. The email took off as the largest network application for over a decade.
The original ARPANET later grew into INTERNET based on the idea that there would be multiple independent networks of rather arbitrary design. The Internet which was initially funded by the government was originally limited to research, education and government uses but later, it was opened when independent commercial networks began to grow. A significant event took place in 1989nand this helped in making the net easier to use. A new protocol for information distribution was proposed bt Tim Berners-Lee and some people. This protocol later became the World Wide We b(www) in 1991.The early internet was used by computer experts, engineers, scientists and librarians. There was nothing friendly about it. There were no home or office personal computers in those days. Those who used the computers had to learn to use a very complex system. Nowadays ,the Internet has become ubiquitous, faster, and increasingly accessible to non-technical communities, social networking and collaborative services have grown rapidly, enabling people to communicate and share interests in many more ways. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs, and many more let people of all ages rapidly share their interests of with others everywhere. The Internet now has gone beyond the scientific and military fields. Its influence extends to every sphere of life and reaches almost everywhere in the world.
